Heat and Wind cause havoc with race times!

Well the wait is over, as several weary Harriers make their way home from the Capital following the BUPA London 10k. The forecasters promised light showers and a high of 15, the runners got sunshine and temperatures in the low 20s, which combined with a strong breeze acting as a headwind in the final 2k run along the embankment meant times were never going to be fast.

Winning the mens race was Mo Farah, whose 29.15 was nearly 90s down on his time from the year before, although he did only arrive in the UK yesterday! The ladies race was won by the south west's Jo Pavey in 32.23, who held off Gemma Steel, with Paula Radcliffe - making a return to racing after an 18 month break - some way back in third.

For the Harriers Matt Ellis was first home in 33.59, with Sam Dalgleish 34.19 and John Collier 35.12 completing the team. John Terry ran 36.49, Robin Phillips 37.36 and Colin Johnson 38.20 - all some way off their PBs. In the ladies, first counter was Emma D'Alton in 36.12, Debbie Marsden made 38.08, Sophie Voller 38.55 and Robyn Golding just behind. Also in action was Kelly Winstone with 46.55

Whilst we await the official results, Bristol and West have a good chance of finishing 2nd in the ladies team competition and winning £1,000 - behind a dominant Charnwood team, who appeared to have 3 in the top 10. UPDATE: It looks like Westburys women have finished 6th in the team competition - well done!!!

Weekend roundup to date...

Very few Harriers  have been in action over the Bank Holiday weekend thus far - the majority saving themselves for Sunday. Clive Hollaran managed 76th in 1.24.35 at the Plymouth half marathon. Meanwhile, over in Wales Dan Studley clocked a new PB in the 3k, winning for Avon in a time of 8.57.6 - well done both!

Also in action, Bristol's racing machine Rob Farley topped the tables at the Wells City Harriers 10k in 33.42, a time somewhat down on previous years. I am presuming that most of the SWs elite are like Westburys and in action in London tomorrow!

London Calling for the Harriers

The UK:A 10k championships are being held as part of the BUPA London 10k on Monday and the Harriers have a big contingent in both mens and womens races. The race promises to be a top-class event with 15 men with sub 30 PBs and 12 women with sub 33.30 PBs entered! Mo Farah and Paula Radcliffe are the biggest names in the event, but without a competitive start for some time, it is unclear just how fast Paula will go.

For the Harriers, the men will be led by Matt Ellis, with Sam Dalgelish and John Collier likely to make up the team (for whom the top 3 aggregate times count). Providing support will be John Terry, Colin Johnson and Robin Phillips. For the ladies a top 6 team position could be on the cards, with Emma D'Alton, Debbie Marsden, Sophie Voller, Robyn Golding and Zoe Dixon all participating. They will face stiff competition though, with Charnwood AC favourites for the title fielding 3 athletes (Gemma Steel, Hannah Whitmore and Juliet Doyle) all with PBs better than 33.30. Assuming they all finish there would appear to be no realistic challengers for the £2,000 first prize.  Bristol & West, Hallamshire, Aldershot Farnham & District, Shaftesbury Barnett, Windsor and Serpentine all have squads that could compete with the Harriers, but on a good day - a top 6 finish is definitely on the cards.

Glover and Golding make their mark at the Hogweed Trot

Robyn Golding showed signs of recovering from her recent marathon exploits as she ran 38.59 to finish 3nd in the ladies race, behind Southville's Lucy Richens and a storming run from Team Bath's Holly Rush at the Hogweed Trot. In the men's race, Anthony Glover showed a continued return to form as he finished 3rd in 34.45, with a Bitton 1-2 in the form of Robert Farley (33.48) and Mike Blackmore (34.19). Also in action for the Harriers was James Noott in 44.46.

Well done all!

15 Harriers in the inaugural Tyntesfield 10k

A good turn out from the Harriers in the Nailsea Running Club organized Tyntesfield 10k, as 15 members of the club took part in the approximately 10k MT event! Leading the way was Brian McCarthy who finished 21st in 42.11, with Bob Pringle in 41st with 44.50. Shona Mackie put in another strong showing off-road to run 48.12, with Jayne Pemble 48.22 and Mike Harris 49.53. Andy Schwartz ran 51.17, Graham Bazley 52.48, Laura Tanna 53.28 and Paul Smith 54.01. Kin Cheung ran 56.35, Isabel Duckworth 57.19, Jane Goodwin 58.17, Roger Long 58.33 and the Thornton's Jane in 1.01.15 and Eirian 1.02.12 made up the Harriers contingent!

The race itself was won by Clevedon's Matthew Newman 37.14, whilst Annabel Granger of Bristol and West won the ladies race in 40.26.

Well done all!

Ellis wraps up title at the Weston Prom

The final Weston Prom of the season saw Matt Ellis cruise to victory in a time of 26.06, some 40 seconds ahead of Clevedon's James Rodgers, with Bitton's racing machine Rob Farley 3rd in 27.27.

For Ellis that represented his fourth win of the series, which combined with three second spots was enough for him to wrap up the overall title as well! There was lots of other Westbury success in the overall series, with Tamsin Chick being the first overall Female and first SM to boot! The ladies also took the ladies team prize, which was a great effort from the girls over the course of the winter! The mens team took the SM title, behind overall winners Clevedon Vets.

Back to the race itself, also in action for the Harriers were John Terry who finished 11th in a time of 28.47, believed to be a PB, with Robin Phillips close behind in 29.13. Gregg Ward, making a welcome return to racing after his London marathon nightmare also broke 30 minutes in 29.57. Jullian Bailey-Gard Jnr was next home in a time of 30.52, which would have been considerably quicker if he learnt to get to the start line on time! Then we had Sophie Voller - first lady home - in 31.09, Graham Clark in 31.21, Alex Miller 31.30 and Phil Court in 32.11. Then Zoe Dixon was 3rd lady home in a time of 33.15, Jullian Bailey-Gard Snr in 34.14, Richard Hughes 34.45, Tamsin Chick in 34.54, Laura Tanna 36.40, Andrew Gibbons 37.07 and David Taylor 37.49. Then Robert Wallis in 37.53, Sandra Price 37.55, Caroline Potter 39.31, Roger Long 39.35, Gill Anagonstakis, 41.10, Jane Thornton 41.21 and Sandra Bailey-Gard 52.41.

Well done all and enjoy the summer off!!!

Studley, Dalgleish and Everington in 3,4,5!

Well done to our three Harriers men at the White Horse 5k, all of whom clocked cracking times to finish 3rd, 4th and 5th! Leading the way was Dan Studley in 15.35, ahead of Sam Dalgelish in 15.59 and Si Everington in 16.12! Bristol and West's Charlie McLean finished 2nd and broke the 15 minute barrier for the first time!!!

Decisions, decisions, decisions...

All you race fans have a veritable feast of choice awaiting you tomorrow, as three local races of very different types take place.

First off, we have the final Weston Prom Run taking place over 5m on the promenade in Weston super Mare - hopefully there will be a few fewer bikers than last month. For the Harriers Matt Ellis will be looking to wrap up the Senior Mens prize, with the team an outside bet for team glory for the third year running.

If you fancy a slightly shorter event, then the White Horse 5k is taking place up near Gloucester. A definite PB course, it is a single loop and very, very flat!

Finally for you fans of off-road the annual Black Horse Dash, up and over the Tickenham Ridge takes place, from the Black Horse in Clapton-in-Gordano, raising money for the charity Holding out Hope.

Hopefully see plenty of Harriers at one or other of them!

Ellis and Phillips run and become

News in from the Sri Chinmoy 2m from Eastville Park and it seems that Matt Ellis destroyed the field to win in a time of 10.08 - quite a performance on a hilly course and only 2 days after the Bristol 10k. Runner up was Bitton's Rob Farley - recent winner of the Easy Runner Athlete of the Month, with Westbury's Robyn Phillips finishing in 4th place. It seems that Matt and Rob have a running battle to see who can run the most races in a year, with presumably them both locking horns again over 5 miles at Weston tomorrow!

Rumour has it Robyn Golding won the ladies race!

Full results when we have them!

Also well done to James Noott who finished in 45.42 for the Berkeley 10k on Monday night!

53 finishers in record turn out for the Harriers!

In what is certainly the largest race turn out, this editor has known, 53 Harriers completed the Bristol 10k today! The full list including positions is available below. Brilliant running from all of you, you have all done your club proud! It looks likely the Emma D'Alton will be 2nd local lady, behind B&Ws Imogen Ainsworth, although that can only be confirmed by her receiving a cheque in the post!!!

In the thirties for Harriers athletes

Early news in from the Bristol 10k and it seems that the thirties were popular with today's runners! First home for the club was Matt Ellis who ran close to 32.30, nearly a minute ahead of John Collier, who made a welcome return to racing with 33.30. Then it was Emma D'Alton who smashed he personal best in a time of 35.32. Robin Phillips ensured the theme continued with a time of 36.30 and Lizzy Smith also broke her PB to run a time of 38.33.

A full report later as the results come in.

Terry, Glover and Mackie shine at the Trail Running championships!

News in from Marlborough where the UK:A's trail running 20m championships held as part of the Marlborough Challenge. John Terry stormed home in 2nd place in 2.11.12, behind former winner Paul Jegou of White Horse Harriers who ran 2.09.21. For Terry that represented an improvement of some 16 minutes over his debut in the event two years ago. Not far behind, Anthony Glover finished 6th (and 3rd senior male) in 2.17.07. For the ladies Shona Mackie finished in 2.44.16 for 8th place and 2nd senior lady.

Then it came to awarding the trail running medals and due to the various age categories all of our runners received awards! John Terry won the gold medal in the Senior Male category, Anthony Glover was 2nd in the V.35 class, behind overall race winner Paul Jegou and Shona Mackie took 2nd place in the Senior Female category!

Awesome running all!

Weekend Roundup!

Quite a few Harriers in action one way or another this weekend! Following on from the success of the Westbury Men on Thursday evening at Wrington, a number of Harriers headed into town to take part in the first of the Summer's Towpath runs. This approximately 10k, multi-terrainer, takes you from Greville-Smyth Park out onto the towpath that follows the Avon below Leigh Woods until you turn and return to make up the 10k.

Leading the club home was Robin Phillips - showing no ill effects from his exertions the day before - who clocked a time of 37.21 for 9th place. Graham Clark, who continues to show improvements of late, clocked  38.44 for 19th, with Jullian Bailey-Gard a little further back in 27th in 39.25. Then we had Matthew Lett-Charnock in 41.24 and Bob Pringle in 41.44. First lady home, was Sophie Voller - in her first outing since breaking the 3hr barriers - as she clocked 41.57 to finish 3rd lady overall.  Then we had Rebecca Lee in 43.35, Richard Hughes 44.49, David Taylor 48.21, Andrew Gibbons 48.29, Julian Wilson 49.01, Roger Long 50.51, Anneke Bull 51.49, Julian Pyrke 52.51 and Paul Mooney 55.09.

Then on Saturday, Debbie Marsden made her track debut in the colours of our partner club Yate AC. Despite only a handful of track races in her life, Debbie came 2nd in the A race 3k and then produced a convincing win in the 1500m in a time of 4.51.7 - some 6 seconds ahead of 2nd place!

Moving onto Sunday - Rich Collinson took part in his 2nd half marathon in consecutive weekends and following on from 2nd place in the Lichfield 1/2, managed 6th place in the Stratford 1/2, clocking 77.11, for an undulating course. He will be very happy!

Well done all!!

Ellis in dominant form, as Westbury secure team prize at the TACH

Matt Ellis showed a welcome return to form, as he eased to victory in the first TACH race, the Wrington Woodland in a time of 34.42. Runner up was Bitton's running machine Rob Farley - who was running pretty much his 10th race in 15 days, who took an early lead, but paid a heavy price as Ellis cruised passed him after the initial 2 mile climb. Anthony Glover finished 3rd in 37.10 and John Terry 4th in 37.43. Colin Johnson was 10th and Robin Phillips around 17th. Completing the lineup for the Harriers was Graham Bazley and Wendy Tippett.

When the team prize was announced, the Harriers came out on top with just 18 points; someway off their record low of 10 - achieved when Anthony Glover, John Terry, Colin Johnson and Steve Adams scored the first four places in the Burrington Blaster last season!

Well done all!

Felix in National call-up

Congratulations to Westbury's Felix McGrath who has been selected to run for England in the World Youth Mountain Running Championships. Many of you (some from bitter experience - Ed.) will know only too well about Felix's prowess on the hills, with his performances in the club's Blaise Blazer event and now following very successful appearances in the trials and also an impressive 3rd place in the U.18 League, he will be heading over to Slovenia for the event in June!

Well done Felix

LT and the two Janes in action in North Dorset

Congratulations to Laura Tanna, Jane Goodwin and Jane Thornton, all of whom took part in this weekend's North Dorset Village marathon. Laura and Jane G. both broke 3 hours - 3.58.27 for Laura and 3.58.57 for Jane Goodwin. Jane Thornton ran 4.09.42. At the business end of things - former Harrier Steve Adams, finished a highly creditable 11th place in 3.03.55 - only a few minutes behind Martin Yelling (husband and coach of GB international Liz!)

Well done all!

Wind rules at Millfield meet

The BMC "PB Classic" meet at Millfield school sadly failed to live up to its billing, as a ferocious wind blowing from the east, put paid to any ideas of fast times at the track classic! Westbury had a number of competitors in action, running under the guise of their track running counterparts Yate AC. In the 800m B race, Kane Lee ran a fine 2.02 to finish In the 1500m mens B race, Dan Studley also finished 4th in the mens 1500m B race in 4.09. In the 3k, Sam Dalgleish ran 9.17 and Simon Everington 9.47 completing the action for our guys!! Well done all for braving those conditions!!!

2nds and 3rds for the Harriers

A quick update as the editor is down in 3G less Cornwall, but it has been a day of 2 s and 3s for the Harriers! Rich Collinson followed up his great run in London with 2nd place in the Lichfield half marathon and a time of 1.16.56, whilst closer to home Emma D'Alton ran a new pb to finish 2nd in the Glastonbury 10k (36.09) helping to put the disappointment of London behind her. Meanwhile Robyn Golding and Matt Ellis both finished 3rd in the Great West half marathon in Exeter!

Also reports of a 3.58 marathon for Laura Tanna, PBS for Jane Goodwin and Jane Thornton and 6thplace for Robin Phillips in the Ashton Court Parkrun...

Full reports upon return to civilisation! More later!
